Dr. Jonathan Gueverra
The College of the Florida Keys’ Sixth President
Dr. Jonathan Gueverra is the sixth president and CEO of The College of the Florida Keys. Since taking the helm in 2012, Dr. Gueverra continues to make an indelible mark through his unwavering commitment to student success and his passion for life-changing learning as demonstrated by his vow to teach at least one course a year. Dr. Gueverra’s creative and entrepreneurial leadership inspired a college-wide restructuring that produced an improved fund balance and a 20 percent increase in the College’s foundation holdings. Under Gueverra’s leadership, the College truly serves the changing needs of a local economy through dynamic innovation.
Prior to coming to the Keys, Dr. Gueverra served as the founding CEO for the first community college in the nation’s capital. He was recruited by DC to lead this effort as a result of his success as the Provost and Campus CEO for the Alexandria Campus of Northern Virginia Community College. Before NOVA, Dr. Gueverra was the Dean for the School of Business and Public Service at SUNY Canton. He directed activities that helped this former two-year technical college become a baccalaureate institution.
Dr. Gueverra has served as Faculty, Director of Program Development, Department Chair, Associate Dean and Dean, at 2-year and 4-year colleges and universities. His publications on planning, leadership and technology may be found in The Review of Higher Education, The Journal of the Association of Higher Education, Technology Source, and On The Horizon. Gueverra’s article entitled Repositioning for a Virtual Culture published in On the Horizon was chosen as a Highly Commended Award Winner at the Literati Network Awards for Excellence 2008.
Additionally, Gueverra currently serves or has served on numerous boards at local, regional, and national levels. Currently, he is on the board of Trustees for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges and Strayer University. He is a member of the Florida College System Council of Presidents where he serves on the Steering Committee and Chairs the Distance Learning Committee. He served on the Board for the American Association of Community Colleges and Chaired its Commission for Academic Student and Community Development. For many years, he has implemented and coordinated Volunteer Income Tax Assistance programs to help low-income, elderly and non-native English speakers. Gueverra has consulted for colleges and businesses on areas related to planned change, program development, evaluation and assessment.
Dr. Gueverra received an Exemplary Leadership Award from the Chair Academy, an International Organization for Educational Leaders and a Lifetime Service Award from Wentworth Institute of Technology for a commitment to service and to learning.
He is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, Alpha Beta Gamma, Who’s Who Among Students and Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. Gueverra earned an Associate in Applied Science from Newbury College, a Bachelor of Science from Providence College, and a MBA and Ed.D. from the University of Massachusetts, Boston.
